Brief History of
Nine Mile Vineyards

Following an intensive site study in 2017, Nine Mile Vineyard established itself in the Walla Walla Valley AVA with a guiding principle: great wine stems from deliberate farming. Drawn to 1,200-ft elevation, dependable airflow, and free-draining volcanic soils, the founders mapped each block to capture the valley’s extended ripening window, free from Blue Mountain influence.

Weather stations installed in 2018 confirmed reliable day-night temperature swings, shaping rootstock and clone selections with Sunridge Nursery. Precision tools—such as NDVI imaging, soil moisture sensors, and real-time climate data—have guided canopy and irrigation decisions ever since.

From day one, the team paired technology with regenerative practices, including minimal tillage, permanent cover crops, pollinator corridors, and drip irrigation calibrated to meet vine needs. These choices sustain soil health, conserve water, and deliver balanced fruit year after year.

Now approaching Sustainable WA, Salmon-Safe, and Bee Friendly Farming certifications, Nine Mile has evolved into a climate-smart, 100-acre estate that supplies winemakers with structured, consistent fruit—and a model for responsible viticulture in the Walla Walla Valley.
