Brief History of
Massey Wells Vineyards
The first blocks in the Massey Wells vineyards were planted in 2003 and harvested in 2005. This block, named Entropy Vineyard, consisted of 65 acres of Pinot Noir clones 777, 115, and Pommard. Additionally, 11 acres of Pinot Gris were planted with clones 146 and 152. These vineyards have consistently produced exceptional quality fruit from the very beginning, thanks to the Willakenzie soil types and their southeastern exposure. At elevations of 250-300', the sites are warmer than most and provide for early to mid-season harvests. This vineyard has proven to be a favorite with winemakers.
In 2005, 55 acres of Pinot Gris were planted in what became known as the Zigzag vineyard. This is on Amity and Woodburn soils and consistently produces excellent quality fruit that ripens early season.
In 2010, the Apogee and Stagger vineyards were planted with Pinot Noir clones 777 and Pommard. These were planted using a Christmas tree planter to mechanize and streamline the planting of vineyards.
MW01, MW02, MW08, and MW10 were the final pieces planted to complete the Massey Wells plantings and are producing excellent-quality Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris.
